FUSION CHARACTERS

VEGETTO
Home Planet: Earth
Race: Saiya-jin
Fusion Of: Son Goku and Vegeta via Potara Earrings
Appearances: Dragon Ball Z

Vegetto is the character created as a result of Goku and Vegeta fusing using Potara earrings. After fusing, they formed a wise-cracking, cocky, street-fighting character with a devilish smirk on his face 24/7. Vegetto easily beats Evil Buu around, making a complete fool out of him. Hell, Buu even changed Vegetto into a jawbreaker candy and he still made a mockery of him!

However, Vegetto stopped battling and provoked Buu to absorb him so he could rescue Piccolo, Goten, Gohan, and Trunks. His amazingly powerful aura prevented him from being fully absorbed to Buu so he could maneuver around his insides. When the aura did disappear, Vegeta and Goku split, but still weren't absorbed.

Goku and Vegeta had the chance to form Vegetto again, but smashed their Potara earrings instead, partly due to the fact that the fusion should be permanent (but was cancelled out earlier due to the circumstances) and mostly due to the fact that their Saiya-jin pride wouldn't allow it.

GOGETA
Home Planet: Earth
Race: Saiya-jin
Fusion Of: Son Goku and Vegeta via Fusion Dance
Appearances: Dragon Ball Z (Movie 12), Dragon Ball GT

Gogeta is formed when Vegeta and Son Goku reluctantly perform the Fusion Dance in order to defeat Janenba in Movie 12. This takes place before Vegetto is formed, so the prospect of fusion is totally new to Vegeta. Goku explains it and, of course, Vegeta is not too eager to do it. After having Goku deliver a crushing blow to his pride with a really cool sounding line and Janenba once again almost killing them, Vegeta complies. He almost backs out again once Goku shows him the moves to the dance, though. ^_^

Anyway, after misfusing (and initializing one of the funniest scenes in all of Dragon Ball) the two get it right. Janenba, angered, charges Gogeta and punches him in the face. Surprise, it does nothing. Unfortunately for Janenba, Gogeta shot a blast that had no trouble blowing a crater in the devilish fiend and then disintegrating him all together.

In Dragon Ball GT, the Z Senshi find that Ii Shenlon is far too strong for them, so Son Goku and Vegeta fuse once again to form Gogeta. At Super Saiya-jin 4, Gogeta has little trouble with Ii Shenlon, but unfortunately, the fusion runs out before Ii Shenlon is killed and Son Goku is forced to find an alternate method to achieve victory.

GOTENKS
Home Planet: Earth
Race: Half Saiya-jin/Half Human
Fusion Of: Son Goten and Trunks via Fusion Dance
Appearances: Dragon Ball Z

Gotenks is the joking, cocky character formed when Trunks and Goten perform the Fusion Dance. Gotenks is amazingly strong, but despite that fact, he overestimates himself. Gotenks is the result of the Fusion Dance, so everytime Goten and Trunks fuse, they only stay fused for a half an hour at a time. After that, they split and generally need to rest before doing it again.

It is also apparent that Toriyama had a lot of fun drawing up Gotenks and his mis-adventures. Not only did the two kids fail miserably during the Fusion Dance twice (creating a weak, fat man and an even weaker, skinny, old man), but when they did succeed, he flew off, believing he could kill Buu, only to return in the next manga panel, bloody and beaten.

A few days later, Gotenks actually gets a chance to fight Evil Buu for real in the Room of Spirit and Time. Not only does Gotenks fight like a childish goof, but he comes complete with a barrage of kooky attacks, ranging from the Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack to the Galacitc Donut.

It's always entertaining to watch Gotenks in action, and clearly Toriyama's intention was to make him fun to watch. Truth be told, Toriyama even stated that his favorite fight in Dragon Ball history was, in fact, Gotenks vs. Evil Buu. When asked how he came up with the Gotenks vs. Evil Buu fight, Toriyama simply replied with "I'm a gag mangakist at heart."
