Perverted and donning a trendy pair of sunglasses....it seems that's the only way perverted elderly men come in Japanese anime.
Living on an island hundreds of miles out in the middle of no where with a lazy-eyed turtle - simply known as "Turtle" - as his only form of companionship, its almost a given that he would become a perverted, porno magazine subscriber (although how the mags are delivered to him way out there is anyone's guess). But there's more to this dirty old man than meets the eye. Oh yes - he was once the strongest fighter on the world.
Heck, in the Dragon Ball series, Kamesennin, Muten Roshi, Jackie Chun, or even Master Roshi to all you dubbies out there, was one of the strongest. He even defeated our hero Son Goku in the 21st Tenkachi Boudakai. However, as all the other main characters continue to train and get stronger, Muten Roshi stays at the constant power level he's always been at - a measly 139.
Muten Roshi is the creator of the great, widely used, ever popular ki projectile blast known as the "Kamehameha" - "The Destructive Wave Blast of the Turtle," amongst millions of other possible translations. First using this to put out the raging fire in Chi Chi and Gyuumao's homeland, Muten Roshi soon taught this move to Goku, Yamucha, and Kuririn, even though Kuririn and Yamucha didn't get it at first. The move was eventually passed on and on, becoming, without a doubt, the most popular move in all of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and even Dragon Ball GT. Muten Roshi is also able to expand his body mass by an insane amount, more than quadrupling his size and muscle bulge. Unfortunately, this does not highten his power level at all.
Muten Roshi once took Son Gohan (Goku's adopted grandfather) and Gyuumao as his pupils. Both of his students were fast learners and wonderful fighters, even though they never surpassed him. Both of his pupils were very fond of their master, as Gyuumao shows early in the series.
Muten Roshi trained Goku and Kuririn for the Tenkachi Boudakai and was impressed with both of their strength and potential. Even though he succeeded in beating Goku in the 21st Tenkachi Boudakai, such a feat would never happen again, as Goku's power soon escalated past his own. However, while Muten Roshi might not have been able to contend on Goku's level, he was still great for backup and for moral support, tips, and general knowledge.
At points in the series, Turtle hints at Muten Roshi drinking some sort of immortality elixir at one point of his life. While this doesn't mean he can never die (he's died a couple times himself) it does mean that he will never die of old age.
As Dragon Ball goes on, Muten Roshi continues to compete in the Tenkachi Boudakai's and even helps out against the Piccolo Damiou battle. It is Muten Roshi, as a matter of fact, who enlightens everyone on the subject of the Demon Piccolo. Unfortunately, Muten Roshi dies in this fight when he misses in a kamikaze attack that, if successful, traps Piccolo Damiou in a jar where he will be sealed forever.
In the transition to Dragon Ball Z, however, Muten Roshi's important goes on a rapid downward spiral. While he's always there for information, tips, and inspiration, he never fights. Of course, he's still able to stay a favorite amongst fans. After all, how can you not love his crazy antics, his hilarious perverted ways, and his grandfatherly advice?
In Dragon Ball GT, he has almost no role, but does appear briefly. It seems that right up to the end, he's still the same old Muten Roshi living at Kame House on his little island in the middle of the ocean.
Unfortunately, a lot of Muten Roshi's greatness is lost in the FUNimation dub. Yes, that's right - sexuality and human instincts are the devil's work, so all of Muten Roshi's bosom grabbing, Bulma drooling, tushy patting hilariousness is completely lost. Oh well...no matter what the dub may be able to slaughter, whether it be maturity, voice quality, dialogue, music, or whatnot, it will never be able to completely destroy the greatness of the man who created the Kamehameha.
