PICCOLO AND KAMISAMA

Appearances: Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT

Piccolo: the tall, green, mighty Namek-sei-jin warrior. Even though you don't care, Piccolo's also my favorite character. Throughout the series of Dragon Ball, Piccolo's gotten a taste of every status, starting as the very first evil character in Dragon Ball, to becoming a wise, mighty faithful ally and friend.

Piccolo's story actually starts hundreds of years before the beginning of Dragon Ball. When Kami and Piccolo where joined as one - just Kami - he landed on the earth in his space ship. A note from his parents Kami found told him to "wait for us." So he did. He waited.

He stayed in the spaceship, thinking it to be a house, for years and years, living off of water. After about 30 or 40 years, Kami finally gave up and ventured outside.

He found himself in the Yunzabit Plains - the end of the world. A barren wasteland, the Yunzabit Plains proved to be useless for Kami, so he explored further out into the world.

Now, as Kami saw more and more of the planet, he also witnessed the evil and cruelty of human spirit. As he was exposed further and further to these sights, the evil inside him grew and grew.

While this part is not ever fully explained, Kami eventually became the God of Earth, where he earned the title of Kamisama. Living high above the earth and watching down with his Godly eyes, Kamisama watched over the Earth and created the Dragon Balls, simply so "the people of earth would have something to do."

However, the evil inside Kamisama prevented him from being a pure, holy God. So, Kamisama split with his evil - forming two seperate entities, Kamisama, the good, and Piccolo, the demon king.

Piccolo, however, was trapped in a jar with a suicidal attack known as the "Mafuba." There he stayed for hundreds of years, until the diabolical genie, Pilaf, freed him from his prison.

Piccolo gathered the Dragon Balls and wished for Eternal Youth (He looked old and raggedy, like Kamisama does) and he transformed into a younger, more powerful form of himself (Basically, Piccolo now without such a slim face and bigger cheekbones). He killed Kuririn, Kamesennin, and Chaou-Zu in the process.

Piccolo also murdered Shenlong after his wish was granted.

Tenshinhan and Goku, however, fought against Piccolo, and while Tenshinhan wasn't nearly as powerful as Goku and Piccolo, he proved to be a faithful ally to Goku, buying him time and saving his life.

Goku managed to defeat Piccolo, jumping straight through his stomach. However, right before he died, he spit out an egg.

The egg hatched and instantly hated peace and prosperity. He also hated Goku, and vowed revenge for what Goku had done to his "father."

Skip three years later, at the next Tenkachi Boudaki. The new Piccolo's grown up and enters the contest. After defeating a recently ressurrected Kuririn, and then even Kamisama, Piccolo finally gets the fight he's been waiting so long for - one on one versus Goku.

The battle than ensues is great and explosive, ending with Goku eventually winning. Goku spares Piccolo's life however, and Piccolo takes hiding, training extensively for the chance to fight Goku, and finish him off once and for all.

Five years pass, and the alien Saiya-jin Radditz appears. Piccolo gets a taste of his power, and realizes him as a threat to his plan to rule the world. He makes an uneasy alliance with Goku to kill Radditz, for Goku holds a grudge against Radditz, too - he's just kidnapped Son Goku's new son.

The two battle Radditz, and eventually Goku sacrifices his life so Piccolo could kill Radditz while Goku holds him in a bear lock - unfortunately, Goku was destroyed by the blast, too.

Realizing the great potential power in Goku's son, Piccolo takes the boy to train him for the fight ahead - two more Saiya-jins, even stronger than Radditz, are heading for earth, and no doubt that they are looking for a fight.

Piccolo trains the boy harshely for a year, and the two develop a special bond - Son Gohan develops a respect and love for Piccolo as a friend and parental figure, while Piccolo makes the very first friend he ever had, and the feeling of a new emotion he's never known before - Love.

Tenshinhan, Chaou-Zu, and Yamcha are perished in the battle with the two Saiya-jins, Vegeta and Nappa. Piccolo, Kuririn, and Gohan are forced to devise a plan - they stand no chance of winning until Goku arrives, and must find a way to stay alive until then.

However, Gohan and Kuririn anger Nappa while Piccolo's on the sideline recovering from a recent beating he took. Nappa is angered and fires a fatal blast towards Gohan.

Stupefied and terrified, Gohan stands there, about to be killed by the blast, until - what's this? - Piccolo charges in and jumps between Gohan and the blast.

When the smoke clears, Piccolo's still standing there, spread-eagles, standing up. He begins to shiver, then falls to his knees, and then to his face. Gohan runs to his side and the two talk. Piccolo thanks Gohan for everything, telling him that he was the first friend Piccolo ever had. Then, with a smile on his bloody face, Piccolo dies.

In the afterlife, while Goku, Kuririn, and Gohan are battling above, Kamisama, Piccolo, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, and Chaou-Zu all meet in the afterlife. The descend down snake road where they train under Kaiousama, the same master who taught Goku while he was dead.

Months later, Piccolo is ressurrected and wished to the planet Namek, his home planet, to battle Freeza. Upon arriving at his home land, he feels a strange closeness to the place. He sets off to help Gohan, whose in trouble, as he and the other heroes are no match for Freeza.

On the way, however, he meets the dying Nail, a Namek who looks just like Piccolo and has just taken a massive beating from Freeza. The two fuse together, using Piccolo as the base, and he gets a massive power boost.

Piccolo arrives at the battle field in a flash of light and takes on Freeza, and beats the crap out of Freeza's second form. However, he transforms again, and Piccolo's forced to take a position on the sidelines along with Kuririn and Gohan.

Freeza kills Dende, a small Namek boy with healing powers, and Vegeta, just as Goku arrives. Piccolo buys Goku time as Goku forms a giant Genki Dama, but he doesn't stand against Freeza's fourth form.

Goku hits Freeza with a Genki Dama, and Freeza's almost killed. However, he survives, and in anger, kills Kuririn and shoots a blast straight through Piccolo. Piccolo's alive, but just barely.

Gohan takes Piccolo, finds Bulma, and leaves the planet Namek as Goku and Freeza battle below, for Freeza has fired a blast to the core of the planet, and it'll be exploding in five minutes.

On Earth, the group recovers and ressurrects their dead friends, while waiting for Goku for almost a year. All the Namek people killed by Freeza are revived, as well as Vegeta, Dende, and Kuririn. Everyone lives together, clustered as to not make their presence known to the rest of the world.

Eventually, the Nameks move to a new planet and Goku finally arrives. A robotic Freeza and his father, King Cold, arrive to destroy the Earth, but a mysterious boy appears and kills the pair without breaking a sweat.

He talks privately with Goku, but Piccolo's godly ears can hear them, even though they're meters away. He learns that the boy is Trunks, Vegeta and Bulma's son, from the future. He tells Goku to train for 3 years, for the arrival of a new, more powerful enemy - Artificial Humans which, if Goku and friends do not train hard, will kill all the heroes and destroy the world.

Goku, Piccolo, and Gohan train for the Artificial Humans together. 3 years pass, and they fight the Artificial Humans. They're truly more powerful than ever. A new enemy, however, appears, also, named Cell, whose goal is to absorb living beings through his tail to become stronger. If he absorbs two of the Artificial Humans, however, he will reach his perfect stage.

Piccolo recognizes the threat and flies up to Kamisama's palace. He suggests that Kamisama and Piccolo fuse so they'll be strong enough to stand a chance. Eventually, after persuasive skills on Piccolo's behalf, the two fuse together, momentarily forming the strongest character in DBZ.

He flies down and meets Cell. The two fight for a while, and Piccolo eventually lets Cell absorb his arm so he can learn - Cell doesn't know he has the ability to regenerate limbs. Cell, thinking he's about to kill Piccolo, spills everything. Then, Piccolo regenerates his limb, surprising Cell, but also making him happy - for, since he absorbed Piccolo, he also absorbed the ability to regenerate limbs, too.

Piccolo flies off to tell the rest of the group of what's going on. However, in the meantime, Cell reaches his perfect stage by absorbing #17 and #18 (he might have already been Perfect Cell when he was fighting wiht Piccolo, but I'm not quite sure).

Cell holds the Cell game, and for, pretty much the whole thing, Piccolo just sits and watches the fight, for Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, and Cell have surprassed him (the four Saiya-jins by training in the Room of Spirit and Time).

Cell is eventually defeated, and Piccolo lives up in Kamisama's palace with Mr. Popo and Dende, the new God of the Earth.

Seven years later, the monster Buu and the magician Babi-Di appear. While Piccolo's no match for Buu, he is a match for Babi-Di, and while Buu's off fighting with the Saiya-jins, Piccolo rips off Babi-Di's head. However, Buu is able to cure the magician.

Piccolo takes the form of a sort of teacher in this saga and barely does any fighting. When Goku returns to the afterlife, Piccolo trains Goten and Trunks to fuse and uses the same stern teachings that he did when training Gohan for the Saiya-jin arrival.

Piccolo, Goten, Trunks, and Gotenks (the fused form of Goten and Trunks) battle Evil Buu (a form of Buu that was created out of the anger of Buu, who was really as innocent as a child, thinking killing was a game because it was the only way he was taught to play. See the Buu saga/bio for more details).

Piccolo destroys the doorway between the two worlds, thinking that he'll trap Evil Buu inside the vacant dimension, even if it means sacrificing his, Goten's, and Trunks' lives. However, Evil Buu escapes, and within 6 seconds, kills everyone except for Dende, who escapes his attack. Gotenks and Piccolo follow shortly after and continue the battle with Buu.

Later on, after Gohan arrives, Evil Buu realizes that Piccolo's intelligence would be an important asset and absorbs him, along with Gohan, Goten, and Trunks.

Goku and Vegeta arrive from the afterlife and battle Evil Buu, eventually freeing the group from the inside of Buu. However, Piccolo dies, along with Goten, Trunks, and Gohan when the earth is destroyed.

They're ressurrected with everyone else on Earth, and help to donate energy to Goku's giant Genki Dama that destroys Evil Buu.

10 years pass. I presume that Piccolo's been living up at Dende's palace with Dende and Mr. Popo. Piccolo doesn't fight in the ending Tenkachi Boudakai, but instead spectates with the rest. He's the first to notice something (most likely because he took it the calmest) when Goku announces that he's leaving to train and live with Ubuu for a little while. With a smile on his face, Piccolo remarks, "This is the happiest Goku's looked in a long while."

Now its time for my personal reflection on the character of Piccolo. Piccolo's my favorite character, as I believe I've stated, for a number of reasons. The first and foremost, would be his honor. Piccolo's honor is remarkable. Unlike, say, Vegeta, for example, he can accept it when there's someone stronger than him. He may not like it, but he realizes he has no choice and that the only way to change this is to train himself. Speaking of training, Piccolo doesn't train the he-man way of lifting weights and such. Nine out of ten times you'll see him floating, arms and legs crossed, face locked in a stern mask of concentration. Very, very cool.

I really hate seeing Piccolo become so utterly useless later on, but I'm glad that he was still important in the Buu saga. Even though he didn't stand a chance, he survived most of it and served as a sort of "mentor" or "teacher"-type. Thank you, Toriyama.

Piccolo's sense of honor and calmness is a powerful virtue that makes him a likable character. Besides that, he, in my opinion, just, in every possible way, rules. Go green! ^_^

Anyway, this marks the end of DBZ.

In Dragon Ball GT, Piccolo is killed when he refuses to leave the Earth before it is destroyed. He spends most of the series -- which for him consists only of some brief cameo appearances, for the most part -- in hell, where he is visited by Son Goku just before Goku disappears with Shenlon.
